No-Sew Canvas Place Mats

So, this Thanksgiving we were hosting for the first time...ever. We invited just one other family to join  us to keep things simple but I still wanted a nice table setting. I went to Target and found some lovely things to make our table just....lovely...and then promptly lost the bag. I have no idea where it went. It's probably sitting at the store, lost and alone, wondering where it's owner went (or back on the shelves ready to be sold...again). Or it's buried in my van, in that place where everything goes to get lost.'s in my house somewhere and in that case, it's gone forever. Anyway, I had nothing to set my table with on the Big Day.

Enter my canvas place mats.

You can see my earlier canvas crafts here, here and here. I have done all these projects with one canvas. It just never ends.

So, a couple hours before Thanksgiving started, after I had pretty much torn the house apart looking for my table stuff, I decided to make our place mats.

Using an existing place mat, I cut out 4 rectangles from an old canvas curtain panel (thus having some of the sides with a sewed hem), leaving 1 inch for the hem. I used the iron and hemming tape to hem the place mats. Super easy! If I could find a way to use hemming tape for all my sewing, I would.

Then I took my freezer paper and looked through my stock pile of stencils to trace and cut a pattern I thought looked ok. Again, using the iron, I adhered my image to lower corner of the place mats and then used craft paint to fill it in.

Since my little centerpiece was also lost, I took some empty canning jars and various sized candles and placed them on the table.

Oooh, ambiance....

Here is our final setting. We went for bold this year...but I think it worked out ok. The turkey was great, the company was even better...what more could you ask for at Thanksgiving?

It worked in a pinch! Hope your Thanksgiving was wonderful as well!
