Decorating your lounge in vintage style

Old-fashioned furniture and accessories with an overwhelming floral motif may come to mind when many individuals think of vintage style home decoration, but that couldn't be further from the truth. The secret to successful vintage decor is to have fun with product selections such as style flooring, rugs, wild patterns, and iconic furniture.  And, it doesn't have to be an expensive endeavor.  Here are some tips on achieving an inspired retro lounge without spending a lot of money and at the same time having a lot of fun.

Where to sit
In a vintage lounge, leather sofas are an ideal choice.  They are stylish, ultra-cool, and wear well in a busy household.  Such a piece can also act as the focal point of the room as long as simple lines and neutral colors are complemented with bright patterned accents.  In addition to a sofa, any retro lounge needs a beanbag chair in the corner lending a playful twist to the room.

Tables and accents
No lounge is complete without a center table and a few accents.  There is a wide range of accent tables available that would work well in a vintage style lounge; it just depends on which era is the inspiration.  Old diner-style coffee tables are a good choice while others may prefer chrome and glass.  The secret is to find a piece that accents the sofa well without stealing the show.

Lighting and ambiance
In order to create the right ambiance in any room, well-placed lighting is essential.  In a vintage-style lounge, brightly colored and oversize lamps are a sure bet.  While each lamp doesn't have to be exactly the same, it does help to have a theme.  Choose the same color or matching lampshades for the room.  Geometric prints, tassels, and paper lanterns are all good choices for that cool, retro look.

Don’t forget the floors
The floor plays a major role in the décor of any lounge and rugs are a great way of livening up a space or changing the feel of a room completely.  Whether the lounge already has carpeting or hardwood flooring, a rug can add to the retro look.  If the furniture is funky, it is a good idea to stick with monochromatic themes on the floor or simple color blocking.  If the furniture is on the simple side, geometric patterns and prints are ideal.

The walls
When designing a vintage lounge it is easy to go overboard.  Keeping it simple yet funky is always a good way to go.  Stay away from garish wallpaper and consider film posters from the days of yore.  Another retro-cool wall décor theme is wall mirror decorations, which will add playful kitsch to the room.

Keeping it in budget
Redecorating a home can cost a pretty penny, but it doesn’t have to, especially when a vintage or retro theme is the goal.  Some of the best vintage finds are waiting for their second life in thrift shops and second-hand stores.  The trick is to visit these stores often and really look carefully, as the inventory has a tendency to change quickly.  Repurposing and reconsidering pieces throughout the house is also a budget-friendly way to redecorate any room – it just takes a little creativity and imagination to create a chic vintage lounge worthy of a feature in any home-style magazine.
