Rustic Step Stool

Hello everyone!
I am finally back! FINALLY! Did ya miss me? I missed you! It takes some effort to get back into the swing of crafting, I discovered. It's sort of like working out...except, a lot more fun and with more immediate results. I'm still working on the workout thing. All in good time.

Well, I finally got around to some of my 'to-do' list projects. This one is sort of a transformation of a plain-ole white step stool....

....into a more rustic and fun step stool. I don't know why this needed to be done, but once it got in my head to re-do...well, you know how this goes.

I had lots of fun with this project. First, I got to use my power sander. Awesome. Unfortunately, I do not have step-by-step pics of the process. Got too excited, I suppose. I wanted to make the stool really contrast in color, so I sanded off all of the paint and varnish on the tops of the step stool. I left the rest white, but lightly sanded over it to remove some of the varnish.

I then discovered (as I should have known) that my lovely step stool was made out of particle board. My original plan was to stain it a nice dark wood color, but particle board does not stain very nicely. I tried it anyway, and just ended up with dark particle board. Hmmm.....maybe I could use paint to make it look more like wood? Well, turns out I'm not really a painter (who knew??) and just sort of stumbled on this solution. I tried to dry-brush some black over it....and ended up with a black streak on my step. Drat. Then, I added some off-white, hoping to lighten it up a bit. Um, hello??? Painting 101: adding white-based paint to black just turns it gray. DUH! So, I added some brown and attempted a dry-brush attempt over all that mess...and ended up with something I liked. WOW! Total accident, but hey...I'm happy.

Tomorrow, I get to add a nice varnish to protect the paint from my little ones feet, which will undoubtedly get the steps nice and dirty. There's a reason I opted for brown on these steps.

Have a wonderful day!
