A Bench for My Socks

Let me explain....I have been looking for a bench for my master bedroom for, well, forever now. My friend's husband excels at making furniture. He has made several pieces in their house and is now branching out to making piano benches for good friends (who need piano benches). I wondered if he could maybe help me out and make me a bench. A simple bench. Something I could use to help me put my socks on in the morning. Like my explanation? Well, my friend did, too. She started telling everyone her husband was making me a "bench for my socks." Yeah...I have some pretty funny friends.

Anyway, he got right to work (like, the day I made a request), and the next day---my bench was finished! I was very impressed and excited to get started on making it "mine."

I decided to use a satin white for the first coat of paint. My initial thought was to paint it white, another color, then sand it down to have the white show. I was putting this lovely color (it's called Cornflower Blue) on the top and decided I liked the two-toned look.

Very nice. But, we all know how I feel about very nice, right? A little too nice....needs character. So, I sanded down just the top and applied my favorite faux-glaze to the edges and the sides.

Then, I sprayed this silver handle (for $1 at our local hardware store) a nice coat of ORB, and drilled it on the top.

Ah, lovely.

I love it! It makes a good front porch bench, I've decided. So, the hunt for the perfect bench for my socks continues....wish me luck!

  9. That is very cute. Isn't it funny how sometimes things work out perfectly for an unexpected rather than their intended purpose?
