Some Thrifty Lovin'

I found this nice lamp at a local thrift store last week. It was only $4! Score! I want new lamps for our master bedroom (don't tell my hubby, since he picked out the lamps we currently have), so I knew I'd have to be very, very, thrifty about it!

The lamp was a lovely silver, but the metals in my bedroom are bronze! We can't mix our metals, right??? Enter the lovely can of ORB (we all know what this stands for in blogland, right?? No? Ok, it stands for Oil Rubbed Bronze, by Rustoleum. You can buy this stuff at Walmart for $3 a can! Steal!)

I wrapped up all the necessary parts, and started spraying, waiting for the gloriousness that is ORB to transform my lamp into something amazing.

Only to realize that the paint is NOT sticking...it's sliding and bunching and dripping. It's not pretty!

Enter my brother, (who builds mansions for rich people), and have an online chat with him about what to do, and listen in amazement as he suggests SANDING OFF THE PRECIOUS ORB AND SANDING THE FINISH OFF THE METAL AND TRYING AGAIN! What?!? Well, ok, I'll give it a shot!

And so I did....and it worked! Like a charm! Thanks, brother! Add a $7 lampshade from Walmart and you have a little piece of heaven, right on your nightstand.

Here's the old lamp and new lamp, side by side....

Bye-bye old lamp!

Hello new lamp.....Lovely!

I also found this lovely little lantern. It was all messy and dirty, but I shined it up and now it's all pretty and ready to display somewhere in my home. For $3, it was also a bargain in my book!

  6. I painted my kitchen cabinet hardware and did the same thing sanding the metal before painting. It was a huge pain, but totally worth it. I never thought about painting a lamp. I'm going to have to try that.
