Sweater Pillows

I love, love, love my summer bedding for our master bedroom. LOVE it! It took me a long time to find and to get my husband to agree on something. Unfortunately, we live in the frigid arctic north, and it requires something a bit heavier in the winter. I'm not totally in love with our "winter" bedding, so I thought I'd try to dress it up with some cozy pillows. Enter my dilemma of a new "crafting budget" I agreed upon. It is dismal, pathetic and paltry. I don't know why I agreed to such a low number. So, I thought of actually breaking my budget and running to the thrift store to look for suitable sweaters, shirts, and other fabrics to make some pillows. But, wait! (Picture a light bulb turning on above my head)...I have a ton of sweaters in my closet! And so does my husband! Budget crisis averted! I had so much fun hacking up these old sweaters and sewing them over some leftover throw pillows. My sister actually gave me the idea of using old baby clothes for batting if I didn't have pillow inserts handy. Hmmm....would it work? I don't know, but I have plenty of baby clothes to find out!

Here's what I started with:

The good thing about using the button up sweater over the blue pillow, is that I can simply unbutton and remove the pillow to use with my summer bedding! So fun!

And here's what I ended with!

  9. How do you make the pillows out of sweaters. Doesn't the knit sweaters unravel when you cut them? I've always wondered about that.

  10. If you sew about 1/4 of an inch in from where you sew with a zig-zag seem, then it won't unravel. And you can't pull on the sweater, you just have to feed it through the machine. If you have a serger, you could probably use that. I don't have one of those, though. :)If you attempt to make one, I'd love to see the finished result! Thanks for commenting, I love 'em!

  11. That looks great! How nice not to make an extra stop to a thrift store where you may or may not have found anything. You saved time and money both!
